Revenge of the Horseclans (Horseclans #3), by Robert Adams

Book Review by David L. Felts

Have you read this book?

Revenge of the Horseclans begins some 20 years after the end of the second book, Swords of the Horseclans. We're introduce to Bili Morghun, now, due to the death of his father, the newly appointed leader of Clan Morghun. But the mantle of leadership isn't all that he?s inherited. It seems a majority of the Ehleenee nobles are conspiring to launch a rebellion. The Horseclans took over Ehleenee lands after their migration from the Great Plains (see Horseclans #1 and #2).

It seems the Witchmen, scientists surviving from the time before the apocalypse who survive by transferring their consciousness from body to body, have infiltrated the Ehleenee church, using their positions to goad the Ehleenee nobles into rebellion and to foster favor for the rebellion among the commoners, who have evidently forgotten how crappy things were under Ehleenee rule 100 years before.

Trapped in Morghun Hall with a few loyal followers and comrades, Bili has to survive long enough for the arrival of a force of Confederation soldiers sent by Milo Morai, the Undying High Lord of the confederation.

Introduced here, Bili Morghun, also known as Bili the Axe, becomes a major character in Robert Adams' series and is featured in several books. Freshly arrived from the middle kingdoms, Bili, is around 16-17 years of age here, already an accomplished warrior and tactician.

Like the previous books, Adams pulls no punches when it comes to excruciating military details. I suppose a more accurate genera classification for this would be post-apocalyptic military fantasy. Harkening back to the day when a novel ran around 60,000 words (like all the Horseclans books), Revenge of the Horseclans is a quick read.

If you've never heard of the Horseclans, but like your science fiction/fantasy post-apocalyptic, militaristic, and gritty, this series is a good choice. I head some rumors about them being re-released, but I don't think that happened. You'll have to check your local used book stores or get them online.
