Atlas' Revenge, by Robyn and Tony DiTocco

Book Review by David A. Olson

Have you read this book?

In the sequel to "The Hero Perseus," PJ Allen--a descendant of Perseus--is just a normal college student when Hermes visits him to say that Atlas is no longer holding up the heavens. Hercules is doing the titan's job, but he won't last long. PJ's only hope of saving the world from being crushed by the heavens is to complete the twelve labors of Hercules and solve a cryptic riddle.

This is a fun book written for young adults about what would happen if the Greek Myths were true, and there really were a bunch of Gods ruling from Olympus. Despite the fact that the world will end if PJ fails, the story is lighthearted. Those young at heart will like it because of the snowboarding, surfing, and trouble with women. The story is fast paced and entertaining. The jokes feel old, but they still put a smile on my face.

The main problem with the book is the complexity of the plot. I felt like I needed a crib sheet to keep track of what was going on. When I got to the end, I didn't exactly understand what had happened, although I had a general idea. It had something to do with the villains in the first book, which I haven't read. However, my lack of understanding of the plot wasn't a big deal because it was still fun to read. And if you have read the first book, you will probably understand everything perfectly.

I found the riddles throughout the book to be largely indecipherable. When the hero learns the meaning of them, I didn't feel like a mystery had been solved, as I didn't feel like I'd been given a chance to solve it on my own.

If you are looking for a fun book about Greek gods in the modern day, this is the book for you. However, if you haven't read the first book you should probably start there.
