It's Only Temporary, by Eric Shapiro

Book Review by S. Fazekas

Have you read this book?

Eric Shapiro handles the well-worn spec fic story of "The End of the World" in a memorable fashion. In just 100 pages, Shapiro creates a thoroughly likable protagonist while putting him through his paces quickly and effortlessly.

Earth is about to be destroyed by a large meteor, and most people go off the deep end. The main character of this story, a 23-year-old man named Sean, decides to finally forgive his former girlfriend for her infidelity. The novella turns on his trek to her house. Sean has to navigate unsafe streets, rescue several damsels in distress, help with a birth and avoid large carnivorous beasts to reach his goal. All the while, Shapiro shows us his thoughts, feelings and reminiscences in a style that doesn't let up. The growth in Sean is all the more poignant in that we know from the beginning (as well as from the title) that it won't last. The final scene at Selma's house is unforgettable.

For those readers who enjoy good writing, a fast plot and outstanding characterization, Shapiro's work will not fail to please. Keep an eye peeled for more from this author; if this novella is any indication, Eric Shapiro will be a very familiar name in spec fic.
