Plague Nation, by Dana Fredsti

Book Review by Michael D. Griffiths

Have you read this book?

I read quite a lot of books these days, but mostly what I receive is somewhat random and this reflects upon my reading habits. It is rare that I know what books I might be getting and rarer still that I might have the opportunity to look forward to one. Plague Nation by Dana Fredsti is a huge exception to this.

As you may remember, SFReader interviewed this author last year and she informed us then that Ashley Parker's zombie series would be a trilogy. I loved the first book and have been looking forward to in since then. When it arrived I felt a little giddy and hurried to finish the book I was reading so I could jump into book two in her series.

As before, I found the book excellent. It is funny enough to give the reader some chuckles along the way and this comedy filled the spaces between the action in an enjoyable way. Yet, it is also serious when it needs to be. Like many horror authors, Dana is not afraid to kill of her characters and we learn that nothing is certain within a world being taken over by the living dead.

The action is ever present within this second book and outshines the first in this department, which is no mean feat. The book centers around a new and much biggest outbreak of the walking dead that this time the group has no chance to control. Instead they focus on perhaps finding a cure and keeping the people alive who might have a chance to do so. As the undead swarm over the city it becomes iffy if even the Wildcards will be able to make it past the zombies without ending up becoming their lunch.

I do not have much on the negative side to say about this one. As long as you like the whole zombie thing, you will enjoy this novel. With the genre is certainly shines. Although action packed this one does not have the truly epic ending of the first one, but it delivers and stays realistic to the degree that you feel the apocalypse might end up at your door any moment.

Ashley is a fun and exciting character. The strong character building does not diminish the pure adrenaline rush that drives the reader through this book. If you even like the zombie genre a little this is a must buy and any horror fan will get a thrill out of this one. I for one will be waiting for number three and frankly hope it does not have to stop there.
