Book Review by Rebecca Mooneyham

Have you read this book?

Patricia Rosemoor and Marc Paoletti teamed up to write The Last Vampire. In this story Leah Maguire encounters a trapped vampire while exploring a cave with her father and brother. After the vampire kills her father and brother, Leah somehow manages to escape. Years later the military has found the corpse of this same 500-year-old vampire. They have taken his DNA and have made super soldiers with enhanced powers. This military team is lead by Captain Scott Boulder. Using her Voodoo magic, Rebecca Dumas awakens the vampire, Andre, and Leah and Scott work together to stop Rebecca and the vampire.

I've heard it said that the vampire genre is overdone. I disagree with that assessment. I think there is plenty of room for vampire stories, especially ones that have a unique twist to them, and I thought that The Last Vampire would be in this category. It certainly was unique taking the vampire's enhanced DNA to create super soldiers. However, this twist did not help to make a great story.

I wasn't sympathetic towards the characters and felt that the main male character, Scott, was very wishy-washy. For example, in the space of one thought he doesn't like Leah, then he thinks he might have feelings for her, then he doesn't. Really? I know humans are fickle creatures, but that was a little much. Also, I can suspend my disbelief when reading sci-fi/fantasy, but the story still has to make sense. There were just too many times that plot points or explanations were a bit absurd or just didn't make sense.

Overall, this was a quick read. It had enough in the story to keep me reading to find out how it ended, but it will not be something that I will ever revisit.
