Too Soon Dead, by Michcael Kurland

Book Review by Michael D. Griffiths

Have you read this book?

Too Soon Dead is another novel by Titan Publishing that I was lucky enough to get my hands on. Kurland's tale is not speculative fiction, but it is full of action and mystery and quite a few villains. Set in Manhattan between the two World Wars, the story focuses on journalists than seem more detectives than writers. Although the story is told from a young writer Morgan's point of view, his boss Alexander Brass is the real mover.

The novel begins with Brass being presented with some scandalous photographs taken of some of the more powerful men in the region while they make love to young women. Brass sends a man to tail the mysterious nameless man who gave him the shots. When this reporter turns up dead, Brass takes it on himself to find his killer.

The reader then follows Morgan as he works with Brass and travels through a sea of characters as they try to discover who is behind the photographs, and more importantly, the murder. When the man who gave Brass the pictures turns up dead too, they know something very dangerous is going on. Hints of Nazis push them forward and tip them into danger.

Kurland paints a colorful landscape and captures the era well. The book has a great flow and is a fun read. The mystery is complex and the reader will need Brass's help to solve this one. The characters are well done, likable and realistic. Even a few famous people of the era are dropped into the tale to provide extra excitement.

This is not really the genre I tend to read, but despite that I got a lot of pleasure out of this one. Not many downsides here. I might have liked to see more of the Nazis and perhaps a little more danger for the characters. Although conversely, it is probably more realistic the way it was presented.

A very good read. This would be a great vacation book, or something to curl up next to the wood stove with.  Any lover of detective novels or mysteries should consider grabbing themselves a copy of this one.  I would read another Alexander Brass novel if I got the chance.
