Fiction Feature Guidelines

SFReader has has been online since 2002 and is one of the Internet’s oldest speculative fiction review sites. SFReader also accepts and publishes short story submissions for our SFReader Fiction Feature. This page contains all the information you need to know to submit your stories for consideration.

The reading period is ongoing. We publish stories as we accept them.

Submission Guidelines

  • No submission fee
  • Story length: 1,000 to 5,000 words firm
  • No reprints
  • SFReader offers to purchase first electronic rights and one-time reprint rights (see our publishing contract)
  • No simultaneous submissions
  • No multiple submissions
  • Email submissions ONLY! Send all stories to
  • Email all stories as attachments in Rich Text Format (.rtf) or Word (.docx)
  • Make sure you include your name and email address ON YOUR STORY
  • Cover letters are optional but encouraged

Fiction guidelines

We’re interested stories containing well-developed characters and settings and cohesive plots. There are no restrictions on sub-genres, though all stories must be firmly within the realm of Speculative Fiction: Hard Science Fiction, Soft Science Fiction, Horror, Fantasy, Dark Fantasy, Cyberpunk, Slipstream, and Alternate History, just to name a few. The speculative element MUST be an integral part of the story.


Authors will receive a one-time payment of $25 USD paid within 10 days of publication. Payment will be sent within 10 days of publication. Payment can be tendered via PayPal, postal check, or Amazon gift card.

Notification and Posting

Authors will be notified via email of acceptance and story posting.

Contracts will be completed after acceptance.
