The biggest surprise of 2016, Deadpool surpassed all expectations to go down as one of the highest grossing movies of the year and earning one more feather in Marvel\u2019s now fluffy cap.<\/p>\n

The film grossed $783 million on a budget of $58 million. Its low budget was because executives at Marvel didn\u2019t believe Deadpool as a character was as marketable as its other more established characters such as Captain America or Iron Man. Surprise, surprise.<\/p>\n

Deadpool is also one of the few comic adaptations to receive recognition by major award committees such as the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.<\/p>\n

Ryan Reynolds was the one who pushed for this film to get made and he did not disappoint as its lead. His whole journey with Deadpool started when Deadpool (the comic character) mentioned that he looks like a combination between Ryan Reynolds and a Shar Pei in the comic. Hearing that, Reynolds believed he was destined to play the character.<\/p>\n

So what was Deadpool all about?<\/p>\n

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a former Special Forces soldier now working as a gun for hire. He meets Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), an escort. They both fall hard for each other. Unfortunately, this period of love is cut short when he’s diagnosed with cancer. In a bid to save himself, he accepts recruitment by a secret organization that pledges to cure his cancer.<\/p>\n

The organization injects him with a serum that is supposed to awaken any latent super powers he may possess. Unfortunately, it takes extreme stress to activate the mutation. This doesn\u2019t work out that well for Wade, since he has a sarcastic mouth that the head of the program (Ed Skein as Ajax) detests. As partly punishment and partly last ditch effort, Ajax suffocates Wade in an oxygen chamber which ends up activating his mutation.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Wade suffers serious disfiguration to go along with his now extreme strength and accelerated healing. He escapes the lab and sets out to locate Ajax, who, at the last, indicated he would be able to cure Wade’s disfigurement. Along the way he runs across a couple of X=Men who keep trying to recruit him.<\/p>\n

Enjoyable beyond just a comic based audience, Deadpool has some great jokes and breaks a lot of rules about making a movie. As in the comic, the character Deadpool breaks the “fourth wall” to speak directly to the audience.<\/p>\n

The fight scenes are well done as are the effects, which are much more limited than your average Marvel movie due to the more limited budget. Some graphic scenes and use of profanity make this R-rated.<\/p>\n

I recommend it to anyone as the film that finally established Marvel as the better comic book adapter than DC.<\/p>\n
