Like its predecessor, Unicorn Precinct was previously published and has now been re-released by eSpec Books.

All the familiar and fun elements of the previous book are there. There’s the humor and banter between Danthres and Torin, Osric sharpening his dagger, Lords being snotty and murders to solve.

Unicorn Precinct is the high-class part of the port city of Cliff’s End, where the wealthy Lords and ladies live with their butlers, dress maids, and other servants. When the betrothed daughter of a rich Lords turns up dead, Danthres and Torin are tapped for the case. It’s high visibility and high stakes. After all, rich lives are more important that poor ones. Lord Albin and Lady Meerka, the rulers of Cliff’s End, want this one solved quickly. Can’t have the rabble think killing a noble is allowed.

As with Dragon Precinct, DeCandido throws in a few unrelated side stories and characters–other detective members of the City Guard working ancillary cases. While not exactly related to the main mystery, these other characters and adventures serve to flesh out the world DeCandido has created and are fun as well.

DeCandido also gives us quite a bit more about Torin’s history, including a run in with someone from his past. This upsetting incident also gives us a chance to see a softer side usually intolerant and impatient Danthres. There’s also a bonus story at the end relating the tale of how Torin ban Wyvald became a lieutenant detective in the castle guard.

Unicorn Precinct was enjoyable, and, except for some slight profanity (a few F- and S- words), suitable for younger fantasy fans. Reading the two books right after the other felt more like reading one longer work. Too bad I didn’t have a copy of Goblin Precinct in my stack….

Genre: Fantasy Publisher: eSpec Books Published: 2018 (2004) Reviewer Rating: Book Review by David L.
