Seeing Redd, by Frank Beddor
Book Review by Jennifer Hairfield
Have you read this book?
Book 2 of the "Looking Glass Wars," Seeing Redd, picks up after Alyss has beat her Aunt Redd and she had jumped into the Heart Crystal with Cat on her heels. Alyss is slowly finding out that being Queen is not all it's cracked up to be, especially when her feelings for Dodge cloud her judgment. And not everyone likes peace; some neighbors prefer war, like King Arch of Borderland. But with Hatter Madigan out dealing with personal problems, is Homberg Molly strong enough to protect Alyss as her personal bodyguard?
While Alyss is struggling with the pressure of being a good Queen, the reader also gets a second storyline -- that of Redd coming back and gathering an army. Evil lurks everywhere, even on Earth. With Wonderlanders who were outcast, human killers, and sorcerers, at Redd's disposal her army grows expediently while Redd navigates her Crystal Maze to unlock all her imaginations potential. Are the two Hearts equally matched or will a powerful force sway the outcome of good vs. evil?
Book 2 definitely has some great fight scenes within its pages. The author has beefed up Redd's killer nature and with King Arch as her ally they truly make a dangerous team. Also, the reader gets more background information on two of my favorite characters, Hatter Madigan and Homberg Molly, and the secret they share. Before Redd comes back, King Arch is a very formidable foe for Alyss. He's very cunning and usually three or four steps ahead of everyone. He's a villain to the core but the author did a great job at the characterization of him so the reader does hate him but still wanting to know what he's going to do.
Beddor created some new characters for this installment that are interesting -- Ripkins and Blister are King Arch's personal bodyguards and their names tell their specialty. They are very vicious and loyal, two things every villain needs in their minions, but in the same breath they are one dimensional characters.
I do look forward to the next book and want to know if the relationship between Alyss and Dodge will bloom or wither and what is to come of the relationship between Hatter Madigan and Homberg Molly? Will Redd succeed in getting the throne back or will Alyss become victorious?
