A Woman Worth Ten Coppers, by Morgan Howell

Book Review by Rebecca Mooneyham

Have you read this book?

A Woman Worth Ten Coppers by Morgan Howell is the first book in his new trilogy called The Shadowed Path. It is a story about a young woman named Yim who has the powers of a Seer. Visited by the goddess Karm when she was a young child, she is told that she is the Chosen. Yim is taken by her father to be raised by a Wise Woman who starts to teach her how to use her powers. When the woman believes that Yim is ready to be sent to the Temple, a Seer comes to take her there. However, on their way to the Temple, the pair is ambushed by thieves who kill the Seer and take Yim to be sold as a slave.

Honus, a man who lives to serve a holy person called a Bearer, is on his way back to the Temple as his Bearer has been killed. Before he died, the Bearer told Honus that he was never to carry his own pack. Under these orders, Honus purchases Yim to carry his pack to the Temple. Yim keeps her powers hidden from Honus, but as they journey and fight against the evil in the land her powers are slowly revealed to him.

The antagonist in this story is a being called the Devourer. It feeds off of death, destruction, and evil and to that end a sorcerer named Gorm has established an evil cult that is slowly taking over the world. This cult is based on hate and the idea that hate makes one strong and that the strong deserve to take whatever they want. The author is not hesitant to show how evil this cult is and this makes the book very dark. I would suspect in the following books that Yim and Honus will work together to try and stop the Devourer.

While reading this book, I had the feeling that I had visited this world before, and the author's website confirms that this is the same world as found in his Orcs Trilogy, but it is 200 years later. However, there aren't any Orcs in this book and while the evil that was present in the Orcs Trilogy is the same evil that is trying to take over the land in this new trilogy, there is no need to have read the previous trilogy to read this one.

I enjoyed this book very much. My only regret is that I have to wait until October to read the next installment.
