The Temporal Void, by Peter F. Hamilton

The premise for the story is there are two realms on either side of the void. At some point, humans managed to take spacecraft through the void into another realm, one that has special properties. People in our universe learn about the universe on the other side of the realm through "Dreamers" who can tie into the Gaia field and watch what occurs. Billions of people have watched hero Edeard, known as the WaterWalker and his battle against corruption beyond the Void. These people have joined a movement called the Living Dream and want to make it through to Edeard's world, but there are a few slight problems.
Temporal Void's action-packed start begins with the destruction of a research station at the edge of the Void. This is quickly followed by three story strands unfolding, all tight little subplots dealing with the politics of the various factions wanting to go into the Void and wanting to prevent humanity from going into the Void. Second Dreamer Araminta has refused the Sky Lord's invitation into the Void, upsetting the Living Dream to know end. Living Dream invades her planet and the hunt for her is on; all she wants is to have babies and fix houses. ANA Security Officer Paula is hunting down clues and stumbles into a tricky situation where her arch-nemesis Cat has returned.
Interspersed with the events of the slowly collapsing known world, the dreams of Edeard continue his saga. His new status in life as a constable has made him immensely popular with women, some unavailable, some powerful and seductive and some, sweet enough to love. While he steps up activities against the gangs making life difficult for shopkeepers, he becomes more and more aware of his ability to call on the City to help him out of tricky situations. His friends worry whether he can keep a clear head and know who to trust.
Science in this novel centers around warfare and neat abilities to get around the universe. Philosophically, the underpinnings of Temporal Void delve into questions about time travel and how people can learn from life and manipulate time to get their desires. This is a very readable novel with Edeard's world almost like a fantasy while the everyday part of the universe is highly technological. Readers will find that there's never a dull moment.
