Terror Occulta, by Victor F. Paletta

Book Review by Eric S Brown

Have you read this book?

Victor F. Paletta's Terror Occulta is both a work of genius and sheer Hades to read. Paletta's world of "Elites" and their enemies simply dubbed "Cults" is highly detailed and fleshed out. The world itself is an amazing place of wonders and horrors that rival the creations of such talented world builders as C.S. Lewis or Robert Jordan. That said, one has to ask why did he not hire a ghost writer to tell the story he had created?

For all the interesting and unique ideas of the novel, it is nearly impossible to wade through. Though the book contains a fair share of typos and errors. These alone could overlooked and forgiven as the book was either self published or released by a small press publisher. Indie books are often filled with these types of issues but usually the originality or cutting edge flair of the story is more than enough to make up for them. In Paletta's case however, the issue is that he is more of a visionary than an actual writer. His prose is awkward and cumbersome. His diction is lacking. These fatal traits of the book sabotage his rousing action sequences which are plentiful throughout the novel. Often, even the middle of heart pounding combat, the reader is forced to pause and reread sentences in order to get a full grasp of what is taking place. As if this wasn't enough, though his concepts are original, the names for Paletta's technologies and such are poorly chosen, and sometimes even misleading to long time SF fans. He will use a word commonly known in the genre, but misapply its meaning -- leaving a experienced genre fans scratching their head.

I hate giving bad reviews, but this book left me no choice. I cannot recommend it to anyone who is well read in the SF or military SF genres with a clear conscious unless one tackles it with the understanding that it will be a tedious read where the only reward will be an original take on what the post apocalyptic Earth may be like.
