"Dead End Dating," Manhattan's hottest hook-up service is owned and managed by Countess Lilliana Arrabella Guinevere du Marchette (Lil, for short). Lil is a 500-year-old born vampire, who looks like a hot 22-year-old: the age at which she lost her virginity.
Her problems begin when an SOB--a Sniper of Otherworldly Beings-- confronts Lil in her office with an ultimatum: find him a sweet, wholesome Catholic girl that he can take home to mamma...or else he'll drive a stake through her heart. And, oh, by the way, she's got seventy-two hours to find said Catholic girl, or else.
It doesn't help Lil's case that the Anthony Soprano look-a-like (Lil's words) has thinning hair and a potbelly...or that he's a complete boor. Lil knows she's going to have to spend some of those hours coaching the SOB on the finer points of dating.
Things only get worse when one of her potential clients becomes demon-possessed, then passes that demon onto her assistant. Forced to consider her employee, whom she dearly loves, time just keeps slipping away from her. And let's not forget Lil's matchmaking momma.
Lil is funny and charming, and the story is told from her point of view. We get an insider's perspective on the difference between born vampires and made ones, and why the two can never be together. Lil also lets us in on all those cool vampire secrets in her off-hand way.
She's determined to make her own way in the world, rather than depend on her family's money or join the family business: office supplies. Yet she recognizes that her one fatal flaw could stop her from realizing her dreams. Shopping is Lil's favorite past time, and boy, does she have rich taste: Bergdorf Goodman, Chanel, Gucci, LaPerla, etc. It's hard to pay your electric bill when you've got to have that pair of Jimmy Choo shoes you saw in a storefront....especially when you've maxed out your gold card on a Tiffany bracelet and a Swarovski crystal belt that is the total bomb (her words).
For all the matchmaking and demon-chasing, this book is still a romance, and we get the low-down on what Lil wants, and what she's not allowed to have. There's a nice steamy scene toward the end of the book which has Lil's toes curling.
Just One Bite will never be a classic. It's possible that in a few years time it will feel passe as fashions come and go and those mentioned in Raye's book have been supplanted by the latest. But the story is lively and interesting, and the page-turning humor keeps it going from start to finish. A very enjoyable read. Recommended.
