A millennia-long war is about to be decided. At the heart of the war is the immortal leader known as the Traveller. He's trying to liberate all the countries overtaken by a woman known as the Demon Queen, who is also an immortal. As the night before the battle wears on, Traveller remembers his story and tells some of it to his companions.

Throughout the story the Traveller is trying to put his life into some kind of context he can understand. He's examining his path and trying to figure out how and why it turned out the way it did, the mistakes he made along the way, and why he's still alive after so many centuries.

The Traveller and the people he's known are all very interesting and the way their stories interlock kept me turning pages until long past bedtime. The millennia long life of the Traveller spans across two continents and changing societies. Blatchley's pacing is good and how he plays different time periods in the Traveller's life as he tells his own story is great.

My main issue with the book was the slight predictability of a few of the twists and turns in the story, but this did not interfere with how much I enjoyed the rest of it. I also occasionally found myself annoyed with a few elements of Blatchley's writing, mostly a few well-worn fantasy tropes, which are small enough issues not to make me dislike the book.

People who enjoy well written first-person stories will likely enjoy this.
