Just finished reading this Quantum Leap book by Mindy Peterman. I love Quantum Leap, watched the show religiously when it was on, and bought all of the books as they came out... I just didn't get around to reading them right away. *grin* In any case, have been using the ones I hadn't read for nostalgia effects over the past year, and it was Song and Dance's turn.
The main plot is that Sam has leaped into Noah's life and Al and Ziggy think he's there to save the life of Noah's mother, Gerda. She had a chance at stardom on a television competition show, but her dance partner "Marty" didn't show up for the audition and so her dreams of singing and dancing were shattered. She died shortly after. All Sam has to do is make certain "Marty" shows up this time. Meanwhile, back home, Gooshie demands a sudden vacation, leaving Ziggy behind. In protest at this unexpected disruption, Ziggy goes on strike, making it nearly impossible for Al to help Sam back in 1978. And to make matters more complicated, Noah's new boss is showing signs that something's not right in her life either, making Sam doubt that he's there strictly for Gerda after all.
This book worked perfectly for that nostalgia factor I mentioned earlier. Mindy Peterman nailed the characters of Sam, Al, Ziggy, and Gooshie and brought the show back to life for me, if only for a short while. The writing was smooth and the plot flowed perfectly. My only real quibble was that the plot itself wasn't really all that complicated (it sounds it in the writeup above, but it's not) so the novel wraps up rather fast. Too fast, for someone trying to relive the experience.
But it was still a great read and a good addition to the Quantum Leap library. I'm sad to say I'm running short on QL books, but I still have one or two left to go. Then I guess I'll have to start rewatching the television series on DVD. (Although I've heard that they didn't get the rights to all of the music back, so some of the episodes don't play quite right. *sigh*)
