Plague World, by Dana Fredsti

Book Review by Michael D. Griffiths

Have you read this book?

Plague World, by Dana Fredsti was a real treat for me. Of course it didn't hurt that I read the first two books and rarely get a chance to read any series these days. Still Dana's mix of character development, comedy, conflict, and action makes this book as well as the two before it a real gift to any zombie fan. And let me just say that if this was made into a series, people would be saying, "The Walking what?"

Our sexy heroine Ash(ley) has her work cut out for her when not only her sick boyfriend, but the only people that have a chance to develop a cure for the zombie plague, are kidnapped. Now not only does her team need to find these people, but she has to manage to fight through a country of undead while knowing they have a traitor in their midst. Add to this the fact that some of her team are losing it mentally, while others could have agendas of their own.

The action starts a little slow as Fredsti catches us up to what is happening and provides a lot of character interaction. Some may not like this pause before the action, but in the third book of a series sometimes you care about the characters more than the action and since her characters are inventive and unique, I enjoyed this part as much as the action that followed in the second third of the book.

The last third is when it got really crazy. I do not want to ruin anything, but I will tell you that the novel goes from intense scene to intense scene, each one trying to top the last.

I can not think of much in the way of downsides with this one. As long as a person likes zombies and horror, they should love this one. As I mentioned it starts a little slow, in the action department, so if you hate characterization and have ADHD, you might not like it and should probably buy some self published splatter fest book for .99 cents.

Fredsti writes a tight, riveting, and action packed novel. It builds on the last two and takes it home. There are surprises and plot twists, which keep the reader guessing. There are also tender moments that could get some tears flowing. I'm glad I got this one and it was a perfect book to round off my year of novel reading. Also her use of comedy and pop culture keeps the reader smiling even as the world goes to hell.

On a side note, I ended up reading the last half or so while camping a full two hours from the nearest town. Out there in the woods, no one can hear you scream, or maybe see you get a little misted up when you finish the last thirty pages of the novel in the dark of your tent with a narrow beam of a flashlight. Although my friends might have been annoyed earlier when I kept saying, "I can't believe this," and "Oh, now what is she going to do."

If you even like zombies a little bit, you have to grab this one.
