Spirit Walk: Enemy of My Enemy, by Christie Golden
Book Review by Heather Hunt
Have you read this book?
This sequel to Christie Golden's "Old Wounds" fittingly contains more action
than the set-up novel and wraps up several storylines with a climactic
pacing that resembles a two-part TV episode. The story, with its extensive
spirit walks, however, is at its best advantage being told in the novel
form. Unconscious bodies lying on gurneys doth not make for compelling
television, but going along on the adventures that take place inside those
heads makes for fascinating reading.
Don't be fooled by the cover shot of Tom Paris. His role is quite reduced
considering the buildup in part one and the novel's jacket. The other cover
character, however, is most appropriate because "The Butcher of Bajor,"
receives a huge story arc dating back to the TV series. I won't spoil his
denouement scene, but suffice to say, longtime Voyager fans may be
surprised.
Paris does have some heroic actions to take as do Harry Kim and Lyssa
Campbell. Original character Jarem Kaz (and his Trill symbiont) also plays a
large role, but Chakotay and his sister, Sekaya, are the real heroes of this
story.
B'Elanna's investigative storyline is only touched upon and left far from
concluded. In fact, new information is dropped in such a way as to indicate
that the prophecies surrounding daughter Miral may be the premise of the
next Voyager book. If so, bring it on!
Non-Voyager fans can enjoy this story, because Golden makes sure to place
every event in context, but, of course, this tale is meant primarily for
Voyager viewers. Enemy of My Enemy is best read, however, after "Old
Wounds." See my review of that novel elsewhere on SFReader for comments on
Golden's grasp of the Voyager universe and her writing abilities.
