The Last Guardian of Everness, by John C. Wright

Book Review by Steven Sawicki

Have you read this book?

This is the first book in the War of Dreaming series about a group of guardians selected to guard the portal between good and evil. But it's not quite that simple. Galen Waylock is the last of the guardians protecting the dream-gate between darkness and light. When the time comes, Galen opens the gate only to find that light is not necessarily equitable with good. But the darkness still needs to be stopped and so Galen takes the task into his own hand and, along with some distant relatives and a few friends, begins the fight on his own.

As to whether or not this is a good choice is the basic plot of the book. Wright creates a very interesting world in which Galen moves and an even more interesting house that quickly comes under assault from a number of different directions through a number of different sources. The baddies are truly bad and quite ugly as well. There are secrets that need to be discovered and latent powers that need to be brought to the fore and urgency around the whole thing as the forces of darkness are not just beating on the door but have already broken it down.

Wright has created a rich environment here for his characters to move in and has also saddled them all with their own histories and pasts which, more often than not, prove to be complications. The pacing is fairly swift once you get past all the introductory material and the ending, while purposely leading into the second book in the series, is satisfying enough in its own right.

One interesting thing that Wright does is spend some time with the forces of darkness so we get a much better idea of their role in all of this and their motivation as well. I particularly liked that aspect as it really rounded the book out. The book is very well written, fun to read and a journey worth taking.
