Looking Glass Book 1: Into the Looking Glass, by John Ringo
Book Review by Steven Sawicki
Have you read this book?
A mysterious gateway opens in Central Florida and soon enough, other places. Out come aliens and they're not looking to meet our leaders. These are not furry aliens nor are they cuddly. For the most part they're nasty, aggressive, and ugly and intent on invasion. As more gates pop open, more aliens appear. The government, unable to cope with the rapid change of events manages to track down a physicist who's under contract to them and sends him, along with a bunch of Navy Seals, to find out what's going on and stop it.
William Weaver is the physicist they find and it does not take him long to figure out that these gateways will keep coming unless they can stop them at the source or find some other way to control them. Luckily, one of the gates opens on a world with aliens who seem willing to help us, or at least provide us with information to help us against the invaders. Or maybe not, depending on how you look at it.
While some of the characters may seem a bit unbelievable (Weaver for one since Ringo gives the guy just too many abilities) the situation of needing to make decisions in the field and who you want in those positions is right on. Ringo also captures pretty well what the reaction of local folks might be--in one case grabbing all the weapons they can find and fighting the aliens on their own.
There's plenty of action here and a pretty fast pace and enough excitement to last for two books, along with the possibility of more to come. A definite must read if you're into military SF at all.
