H. P. Lovecraft's to Rheinhart Kleiner is another volume in the series of letters from Lovecraft to a specific correspondent or correspondents. It collects not only all the extant letters from Lovecraft to Kleiner, but it also gathers together various poems and other writings by the two, written in close relation to the friendship between them.
Although not speculative in themselves, the letters help illuminate Lovecraft, and his development into the major author of weird fiction that he became. Whereas the volumes of letters published by Arkham House concentrated mainly upon his friendships with other weird authors, these letters, and ones like them to other early and amateur friends, helps round out our picture of Lovecraft's life and thought.
I have a particular interest in this latter case: the letters here help us understand more clearly Lovecraft's aesthetic, a particular interest of mine, given a book on that subject that I am writing. But this is not the only subject of interest, and none is perhaps as fascinating as Lovecraft on Lovecraft himself.
Letters to Rheinhart Kleiner is another major production. The editors must be congratulated for the splendid job that they have done, and, as related volumes continue to appear, the widening body of uncondensed letters should give us all a greater understanding, and a fuller portrait, of one of speculative fiction's more fascinating and important writers.
