Horror Movie Freak, by Don Summer

Book Review by Michael D. Griffiths

Have you read this book?

Do you love Horror Movies? I mean do you really love them? Are you constantly seeking out new attempts at cinematic terror, while also plunging into the classics, watching them again and again? Have you stayed up late at night listening to the floorboards crack and staring into the dark closet dreading the idea that there might be some Horror Movie gem out there that you could have missed?

If this is you, then you should consider grabbing yourself a copy of the new book by Don Summers, Horror Movie Freak. The 255 page soft cover introduces the love of Horror Movies and discusses our need and passion for more creeps and scares. However, the majority of the book is comprised of movies reviews ranging from the classics in terror to movies that have just come out this year.

Don Summers spearheads the project with the assistance of Everett Roberts, James Lasome, Bill Burna, and Heather Ross. Most of these macabre folks have some association with the online forum, Best-Horror-Movies.com and the forum helped spur the publication.

Each movie that is reviewed is categorized in over a dozen different sections, which include such headings as Homicidal Slashers, Aberrations of Nature, Evil From Hell, and Zombie Invasion. One can read through the book normally, but if you just had to see Aliens From Outer Space tonight and wanted to quickly check to see if there was a movie in that genre that you could have missed, these chapters could come in handy.

This group of reviewers goes out of their way to not only pick the must see movies for each section, but try to uncover more rarely viewed films to insure the readers hasn't missed any hidden treasures.

The reviews list; the movies, date of release, the directors, as well and the film's primary stars. They even let you know the scare/gore factor. Summers and his compatriots then review the movie itself discussing its plot, release history, and other facts that could be of interest to all the other Horror Movie Freaks out there.

Summers hits all the big scares and must sees. Since he focuses so heavily on the best of the best what could be of greatest use to the other HMFs out there might be spying some of your favorite types of movies that you could have somehow missed. Many might also enjoy the summaries of the movies they love so well.

Since real Horror Movies Freaks watch their favorite films so many times, potential issues that could bother some would be that the summaries just outline a story that the already know so well. Do I really need someone to tell me the plot to Dawn of the Dead?

The book succeeds in what it sets out to do and most serious horror fanatics would enjoy having in on their book self and could not only be entertained, but also benefit from having it as a reference guide. The pictures are well placed and hey, it even comes with a free copy of George Romero's Night of the Living Dead DVD. So if Horror Movies are a constant craving that seeps into all your waking hours and haunt your nightmares, you might consider grabbing yourself a copy of this one.
