Book Review by Michael D. Griffiths

Have you read this book?

Okay I got another YA book, but at least it wasn't written in present tense. This one is written from a teen-aged girl's perspective. She is also beautiful and one of the richest girls on the planet. So yes, putting myself in her shoes felt a bit awkward, but Lily is a likable gal and her life of extreme luxury has not made her as pampered and annoying as it could have.

As the book begins, Lily's chief concern is her desire to follow her own path in life instead of the one being dictated by her overbearing parents. This quickly changes when she is on hand for the reawakening of an ancient mummy named Amon who is brought to life to save the Earth from the evil god of Chaos Seth.

Amon is young and handsome and you guessed it, she falls for him hard, although it does take a little while to get over his strange manner and magical feats. Soon, however, the 'honeymoon' is over as Lily becomes involved with life and death struggles that mix danger, travel, monsters, and magic.

Once things get going, the action is swift and constant. Lily is hard pressed to survive even with Amon's aid. There are a few plot twists and creepy moments that keep the reader turning pages. Lily is an enjoyable and intelligent character and the author works hard to keep a level of realism within the supernatural explosion that hammers Lily's normal life.

Down sides for me here might not be the same for a teen-aged girl reading this work. I was not sure why Lily had to be the richest of the rich. If I was not distanced enough trying to place myself within the head of a teen-aged girl crushing on a guy, her wealth created a few more levels of space between us. Also despite her general high levels of intelligence, she could not pick up on some super obvious signs and monster hints as to why Amon was keeping his distance. I know this is an analogy for a teen-aged girl's issues, and love plays strange tricks on us, but if she cared so much about the guy, she might have taken a few more stabs at why Amon might be keeping his emotions in check.

I think young women that enjoy supernatural romps will love this book. Probably some young male teens would enjoy it as well. It is a great book, but does not transfer to the adult reader as well as some. Still the author has gone through a huge effort creating a world around the Egyptian mythos and does a fantastic job in doing so. The novel is epic in scope and takes the reader on an exciting journey. Might be a good present for your niece this Christmas.
