The Iron Jackal: A Tale of the Ketty Jay, by Chris Wooding

Book Review by Jeremy D. Carr

Have you read this book?

Welcome to the world of the Ketty Jay!

It is a world not our own, but it is familiar in so many ways. It is a place with alternate high technology, magic turned science in the form of daemonology, and an unsettled political landscape that keeps all people living under the constant threat of war.

Here we meet Cap'n Frey, owner of the airship Ketty Jay. As a famous war hero and pirate captain, Cap'n Frey has assembled an unlikely but wholly competent crew with whom to seek his need for glory. There is Crake, the resident daemonologist with his sidekick Bess, a giant armored golem; Silo, the ex-slave turned master mechanic; Jez, the half-dead (in a good way) navigator with otherworldly abilities; Malvery, the drinker with a doctoring problem; and Harkins and Pinn, the out jet pilots, the first one a coward and the other a hot tempered half-wit.

They play it fast and loose, seeking adventure and booty wherever they can find it. But when they take on a job to steal an unknown ancient artifact for a mysterious collector, things turn serious very quickly. When Cap'n Frey decides to inspect the artifact for himself he is struck with the curse of the Iron Jackal. It is a curse most deadly from which there is only one escape.

Now this crew of misfits with nowhere else to turn must band together to save all they have left. All they had in common was their untold secrets, but as these secrets are revealed in the name of survival, they bring the crew closer than ever before. Now if they can only survive what needs to be done for the Cap'n to survive the Iron Jackal.

The Iron Jackal: A Tale of the Ketty Jay is an exhilarating read with non-stop action. As the first installment from author Chris Wooding, this is a great introduction to a new world in the science fiction realm. With a well developed set of characters and a history and landscape given to their world, it is a place I look forward to visiting again.

Thankfully the sequel The Ace of Skulls: A Tale of the Ketty Jay is set for release soon, in August 2014. I cannot wait to see what trouble the crew of the Ketty Jay will get themselves into next.

If you are a sci-fi reader this book is for you. Please, enjoy!
